Arthur “Art” Hawling Fulton, 87, born on June 15, 1929 in Rye, New York, passed away on February 23, 2017. He was the son of Arthur H. Fulton, Jr. and Vivian Walker Fulton. Arthur spent his early years on a dairy farm near Leesburg, Virginia.
Art attended and graduated from Randolph Macon Academy, Front Royal, Virginia. He considered RMA his home and gave the Academy credit for molding his successful personal and business life. Arthur was associated with RMA for over 60 years, as a student, supporter and Board of Trustee leader. He retired from the Board of Trustees at age 80. RMA was the pride and joy of his life. Upon graduation from RMA, Art attended Virginia Tech and remained a loyal supporter of the Hokie football team.
Arthur married Dorothy Ellen Henry in Front Royal on June 2, 1951. They began their life together on the family dairy farm in Loudoun County. Later they moved to Boyce, Va. and subsequently to Stephens City, Va. He and Dorothy began their business with one truck and over the years expanded the business to national prominence, with multiple terminals and 500 trucks.
As Fulton Trucking grew, Art became more involved with the Truck Load (TL) Division of the American Trucking Association, working his way through the various offices to become President of the TL Division. During his tenure he traveled extensively and spoke to numerous groups around the United States as a powerful promoter of this great American industry.
He was one of the founding members of the Frederick County Rotary Club which began as Stephens City Rotary Club. Art believed firmly in the values of the Rotary International and in serving the community in which he lived. He proudly served as Chairman of the Warren Memorial Hospital, a not-for-profit hospital, and was instrumental in the effort to affiliate with the Valley Health System.
After Dorothy’s death in 2000, Arthur married Martha Sandy Fulton. He is survived by his wife and his children: Robert H. Fulton, Westcliffe, CO, Kathryn Leigh Fulton Davis (Rusty) of Bakersfield, CA, James Thomas Fulton (Jennie) of Eden, North Carolina, John Harold Fulton (Christy) of Richmond, VA and Marietta Schmidt (John) of Frederick County, Va. His grandchildren include Andrew Fulton, Amber Phillips, Morgan Haldeman, Caitlin Davis, Julie Clifford, Heather Mitchell, Michael Fulton, Abby Fulton and Aaron Fulton. He also has 9 great grandchildren.
Arthur’s extended family includes stepchildren, Bruce Matthias (Karen) of Harrisonburg, VA, Susan Ritter (Philip) of Stephens City, VA and Charles R. Matthias of Front Royal, Virginia.
Arthur was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dr. James Fulton, also a graduate of Randolph Macon Academy.
Art was a loyal member of the Opequon Presbyterian Church in Kernstown, Virginia where his Celebration of Life Service will be held on March 11, 2017 at 12 noon. Visitors will be received one hour prior to the service. Burial will be private.
