Betty A. (McLain) Meeker
Betty Arlene McLain Meeker, 89, of White Post, Virginia, died peacefully Monday, August 29, 2016, at Blue Ridge Hospice Residential Center. Mrs. Meeker was born in 1926, in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Dorothy and George McLain. She was a graduate of Pottstown High School, Class of 1944. Mrs. Meeker was employed as a bookkeeper until her retirement in 1997.
She married Raymond Lynwood Meeker, Sr. on January 18, 1947, in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. They were married 68 years. He preceded her in death on June 14, 2015. Surviving is her son, Raymond L. Meeker, Jr. of White Post, Virginia; grandchildren, Grant Nicholas Meeker of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Samantha Ashley Meeker of Baltimore, Maryland; Alexandra “Lexi” Rae Meeker of Martinsburg, Virginia; brother, George McLain and wife, Dottie; sister-in-law, Sylvia McCullough of Florida; nieces and nephews, Brenda, Beth, George, Kathy Lou, Billy and Kevin. Her sister, Barbara McLain Bock and brothers-in-law, George Bock and John McCullough, preceded her in death.
She was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Haddon Heights, New Jersey and Bethel Lutheran Church in Winchester, Virginia. Mrs. Meeker was also a member of the Woodbury Country Club in Woodbury, New Jersey, the Philadelphia Golf Association and the Winchester Country Club in Winchester, Virginia. Mrs. Meeker started the library at Osage Elementary School in Voorhees Township, New Jersey in the mid 1960’s. She was a volunteer at Camden County Libraries in Kirkwood, New Jersey. She was also a volunteer at Underwood Memorial Hospital in Woodbury, New Jersey, assisting with the Hospital Golf Tournaments. Betty also assisted with Youth Golf Tournaments in the South Jersey area.
She was selected her senior year of high school to go to work at Mrs. Smith Pies in service to her country while her male peers were away fighting in WWII. Betty continued at Mrs. Smith Pies for several years being promoted to Head Bookkeeper for Mrs. Smith Pies.
Betty was an excellent athlete, having played field hockey, basketball, and running track at her high school in the 1940’s. During her twenties, Betty took up golf and bowling and became the Women’s Golf Club Champion multiple times at Woodbury Country Club in Woodbury, NJ. Betty also played on the Women’s Golf Team at Woodbury Country Club for over 30 years and traveled with the team to play nearly every course in the Philadelphia Golf Association. Betty also bowled in two leagues for many years and was a member of the Women’s bowling team that represented Woodbury Country Club in the Philadelphia Golf Association.
Betty won many individual awards for her bowling prowess including high average for the Philadelphia Golf Association. Betty also became president of the Philadelphia Golf Association Women’s Bowling League and served a one year term. Betty continued to play golf and bowl in her retirement. She played golf well into her 80’s. Of note, her grandson’s goal when she was 75 and he was 13 (and at that point nearly a foot taller than her) was to beat her at a single round of golf.
Betty was also an avid Philadelphia Phillies Fan, Eagles Fan and Clemson fan where her son attended college. She rarely missed any game where one of her grandchildren was participating in baseball or softball. Indeed, even after she lost her eyesight, she loved to listen to baseball games on the television or radio, keeping the score throughout the game. One of her favorite places on this earth was Capon Springs and Farms where she and her husband were 80th Anniversary Honorees having spent over one year of their lives at the resort. A bench was dedicated in honor of her and her husband’s 65th wedding anniversary. She would exclaim proudly “I’ve been married 65 years, and all to the same man!”
Services with Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel, will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made in Betty’s memory to John W. Brill Foundation, c/o Capon Springs and Farms, P.O. Box 0, Capon Springs, West Virginia, 26823.
