It is with great sadness that the family of Dorothy Rhyne Husted announces her passing on Saturday, July 14, 2018, at the age of 103.
Mrs. Husted was born in 1914 in Oakland, California, the daughter of the late Jesse and Della Rhyne. She graduated from University of California at Berkeley earning a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism. Dorothy married Jim Husted and moved to Maryland, where they raised their family, and remained there for 56 years. She was a first grade teacher with Montgomery County Public Schools, and loved to teach the children to read, retiring from the school system. Dorothy was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority, Kappa Phi Methodist Women’s Club, Montgomery County Retired Teachers Association, National Education Association, and volunteered at Holiday Park Senior Center Gift Shop. Dorothy was a member of Woodside United Methodist Church, Silver Spring, Maryland.
Dorothy had a real zest for life! She loved her family, friends, global travel, exercise and outdoor activities, and had many hobbies. For the past six years Dorothy lived in Winchester and she greeted everyone with a happy smile, two thumbs up and “Hi Buddy”! The family is very thankful for the compassionate care Dorothy was given at Spring Arbor Assisted Living and Blue Ridge Hospice.
Her husband and love of her life, James Henry Husted, whom she married December 27, 1941 in Oakland, California, preceded her in death in 2000.
Surviving is a daughter, Ann Husted Taylor (Jim) of Winchester, Virginia; son, David James Husted of Denver, Colorado; grandchildren, Carrie Allison Lutz (Chet) of Sterling, Virginia and Melissa Taylor Pearce-Gonzales (Bryan) of Winchester, Virginia; and three great grandchildren.
Along with her parents and husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by sisters, Helen Egan and Mildred Egan Bremler; and brother, John Egan.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 pm on Saturday, July 21st, at Christ Episcopal Church, 140 W. Boscawen Street, Winchester, Virginia with The Very Reverend Webster Gibson officiating.
