June Luttrell Shifflett, 84, of Frederick County, Virginia passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loving family and friends.
June was born in 1933 in Winchester, Virginia, the daughter of the late John R. Luttrell, Sr. and Margaret Hickerson Luttrell. She attended Miller Grade School and graduated from the first class of James Wood High School in 1951. Over the course of her life, she worked as a stay-at-home mom, substitute teacher, shop owner, and clerical assistant at Winchester Memorial Hospital where she retired after 20 years of service. June enjoyed bird-watching, antiquing, musical theatre, canning vegetables from the family garden, traveling, documenting the Shifflett and Luttrell genealogy, and spending time with family and friends. She was especially fond of the friendships forged with her pool mates from the The Wellness Center in Martinsburg, West Virginia. She attended Sunnyside Presbyterian Church and Shockeysville United Methodist Church.
June married Russell Shifflett on April 18, 1953 in Winchester, Virginia. They were married 64 years, living out their life together on Spring Acres Farm in Frederick County where their ever-expanding circle of family and friends continue to gather to this day. Russell, the love of her life, preceded her in death in May 2017. June loved her family deeply and treasured her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was “grandma June” to many others.
Surviving are her five children – daughters Karen Cowherd (Robin) of Norfolk, Virginia, Donna Howard (Robert) of Holiday, Florida, and Laura Shifflett of Winchester, Virginia; sons, Larry Shifflett (Teresa, deceased) and Allen Shifflett both of Winchester, Virginia; 13 grandchildren, Michael Myers, Jessica Burnham, Diron Corrigan, Erin Swemba, Sarah Cowherd, Keith Shifflett, Russell Shifflett, Anna Shifflett, Mary Shifflett, Bethany Shifflett, Jennifer Gardiner, Melissa Rutherford, and James DeHaven, Jr.; 13 great grandchildren; and her much loved sister, Carol Luttrell Sealock of Front Royal.
Mrs. Shifflett was preceded in death by her brother, John Luttrell, Jr. and beloved daughter-in-law, Teresa Shifflett.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 14 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. Burial services will be private.
The Shifflett family would like to extend their gratitude to the wonderful, caring people of Blue Ridge Hospice, especially to Barbara Knight and Angel DeHaven, who lovingly aided our family through the precious end of life months we had with our parents. Memorial contributions in memory of June may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 West Cork Street, Suite 405, Winchester, Virginia 22601.
