Mr. Kerns was born in 1938 in Frederick County, Virginia, the son of the late Ernie Kerns and Stella Armel. He was a heavy equipment operator with VDOT for 32 years, retiring in 1995. Mr. Kerns enjoyed hunting, fishing, and found great pleasure in working outdoors with gardening or planting trees and applying his carpentry skills as a “jack-of-all-trades” with building and fixing things; he also enjoyed attending auctions. Mr. Kerns was of the Methodist faith.
Max’s greatest love was his family. He was a wonderful, giving, and thoughtful husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He loved to watch t.v., feeding the squirrels and birds and watching them eat on his porch. Max taught his family “if you do a job large or small, do it right”.
Mr. Kerns married Virginia F. Unger on June 12, 1958 in Hagerstown, Maryland.
Surviving with his wife of 58 years are daughters, Cindy Shanholtz and husband, Terry of Winchester, VA, Jennifer Stotler and husband, Keith of Gore, VA, and Alice Burleson of Winchester, VA; granddaughters, Tiffany Peters and husband, Bryan of Cross Junction, VA, Tracy Brannon and companion, Jason Stine of Gore, VA, and Whitney Burleson of Winchester, VA; great granddaughter, Gretchen Mittong of Gore, VA; sisters, Linda Minnick and husband, John of Columbia, SC, Luwilda Foreman of Columbia, SC and Dorothy Williams and husband, Bobbie of Clear Brook, VA ; brother, Ernie “Dick” Kerns and wife, Hazel “Penny” of Winchester, VA; and his faithful companion, Bruiser.
Mr. Kerns was preceded in death by brothers, Beverly Kerns and Roger Kerns.
Max will always be missed by his family, but he will always be loved “forever in our hearts”.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 12 to 2 p.m. with a funeral service at 2 p.m. at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel with Reverend Pete Wadsworth officiating. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Whitacre, Virginia.
Memorial contributions in memory of Max may be made to Gore Volunteer Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 146, 7184 Northwestern Pike, Gore, Virginia 22637.
