Dick was born in 1935 in Siler, Virginia, the son of the late Isaac M. and Ida M. Whitacre. He was a graduate of James Wood High School, Class of 1954 and graduated from the National Radio Institute in 1959, and retired from Sears as a service technician, retiring after 30 years of service. Dick was passionate about hunting, baseball, and music; he especially loved singing and playing the guitar with his family. He had a lifelong devotion to the Christian faith. Service to his church included being superintendent of Chestnut Grove United Methodist Church; Bible teacher for adult classes; and deacon and elder at the Church of Christ at Mountain View in Stephens City, Virginia. A loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather that will be missed by many.
Dick married Betty Adams Whitacre on July 20, 1955 in Winchester, Virginia.
Surviving with his beloved wife of 62 years are two sons, Rick Whitacre (Cathey) of Cross Junction, Virginia and Jeff Whitacre (April) of Stephens City, Virginia; daughter, Amanda Whitacre Waters (Doug) of West Chester, Ohio; brother, Robert Whitacre, Sr. of Siler, Virginia; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents Dick was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Church of Christ at Mountain View, followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m. with Richard Rexrode officiating. Interment will be in Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Frederick County, Virginia.
