Deborah C. Merritt
Deborah C. Merritt passed away peacefully due to complications from breast cancer on September 2, 2016 in Annapolis, MD with her husband and son at her bedside. She was 57 years old.
A native of Winchester, VA, she graduated as a distinguished scholar from Mary Washington College in 1981 and The College of Notre Dame in Maryland with a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership in 2001. At the time of her passing, she was the Media Specialist at Plum Point Middle School, Huntingtown, MD.
Debbie and Chuck were married in Annapolis, MD, on August 3, 1985 at the U. S. Naval Academy Chapel. After her son Kenny was born in 1989, she was a full-time mom until joining Calvert County Public Schools as an instructional assistant at Huntingtown Elementary School. She helped open the Mill Creek Middle School media center and then became a Plum Point Middle School Gator. She shared her love of reading and research with teachers and students as well as serving as a member of the Black-Eyed Susan Committee of the Maryland Association of School Librarians for many years.
After her family, Debbie loved her Cairn Terriers (Brady and Carly) and cheering for the University of Florida Football, Softball, and Basketball teams. She was a member of Huntingtown United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Charles R. Merritt, Jr, of Huntingtown, MD; son, Kenneth R. Merritt of Chicago, IL; and mother, Emily S. Clevenger of Winchester, VA.
She is predeceased by her father, Kenneth M. Clevenger of Winchester, VA.
The family will receive visitors starting at 11:00AM at Omps Funeral Home, Winchester, VA on September 9, 2016. A memorial service will be held at 1:00PM followed by burial at Mt. Hebron Cemetery at 2:00PM.
