Robert B. “Rob” Wright, 67, of Winchester, Virginia passed away Thursday, March 21, 2019, at his home with his wife by his side.
Rob was born in 1951 in Winchester, Virginia, the son of the late Betty and Loring J. Wright, Jr. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) earning a Bachelor’s degree in 1973 and a Master’s degree in Vocational Education in 1977. Rob was an educational teacher for 30 years. He taught Industrial Arts at Roanoke County Schools and Salem City Schools from 1973-1985. Leaving education for a brief time, Rob worked alongside his father and brother at L.J. Wright & Son Oil Company for 12 years. In 1998 Rob returned to teaching (Technology Education) at Sherando High School, retiring in 2017.
As a youth Rob was active in scouting and earned Eagle Scout status. As a hobby he was an avid woodworker and cabinet maker. Golf was his passion; playing, watching and coaching. He coached the Sherando golf team for 17 years. Rob was awarded The Winchester Star Golf Coach of the Year multiple times. He was very involved with the Kiwanis Club of Winchester, where he held many offices throughout the years. And above all else, Rob loved the Hokies. He has been a football season ticket holder since 1973.
He married Mary Felicio on November 17, 1973 in Winchester, Virginia.
Surviving with his loving wife of 45 years is a son, Zachary Phillip Wright (Bailey) of Stephens City, Virginia and their son, Rob’s grandson, Charles Loring Wright; and a very dear cousin, Phillip Brooks Bush of Washington, D.C.
Rob was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Joseph P. Wright.
A visitation will be from 5 pm to 8 pm on Monday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
A memorial service will be at 5 pm on Tuesday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. A reception will follow the service at Omps Reception Center, Amherst Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Honor of Rob Wright to Sherando High School Athletic Scholarship Fund, c/o Jason Barbe, DSA Sherando High School, 1855 Warrior Drive, Stephens City, Virginia 22655.
