Scarborough, Grace Verena (Allison)
died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, July 21, 2016, in Winchester, VA. She was 93 years old and the widow of Lewis Preston Scarborough (d. 1989).
A native of Norwalk, CT, Mrs. Scarborough was born on July 13, 1923, a daughter of William E. and Alice (Hall) Allison. She grew up in Norwalk and graduated from Norwalk High School.
After her marriage in October, 1943, she continued to live in Norwalk. Later during World War II, she and her husband moved to Chicago where he became a radio and communications instructor at Great Lakes Naval Training Center. At the war’s conclusion they lived in Blacksburg, VA while Mr. Scarborough attended Virginia Tech (1946-9) for his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. Upon graduation in 1949, they moved to Mercersburg, PA, where he was an engineer for Mercersburg, Lemasters and Markes Electric Co (ultimately a part of First Energy Corp), and she was a full-time housewife and homemaker. They raised four children– Cary P.(Clarke Co. VA), Lynne A.(Plymouth CT), Alan Lee (d. 2006) and Anna Marie (Ellicott City MD).
Since 2002 she lived in Dunnellon FL, Salisbury NH, West Redding CT, Greencastle PA and Winchester VA.
Mrs. Scarborough is survived by three of her children and two grand-children (Nathan Scott Berger, Hagerstown, MD and Sarah Meisheid, Mt. Airy, MD).
She was a longstanding member of the Order of Eastern Star, first in Norwalk, CT, and then in Fulton Co, PA. Since 1950 she has been in the congregation of St John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mercersburg, PA.
Private burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.
There are no calling hours.
